Net metering with United Power
United Power is a member-owned cooperative serving the northern Front Range. Under a net metering agreement with United Power, your meter tracks energy in both directions and excess production builds up in a "net meter bank" you can draw from later.
Credit mechanism
Net meter bank of excess kWh
Regulation
Board-governed co-op; own rate design
Note
Fixed/demand charges aren't offset by solar
How it works, step by step
Two channels on one meter
United Power's net meter records the power delivered to your home and the excess power received from your solar separately. Solar used inside your home never touches the meter — it simply reduces what you buy.
Excess builds your net meter bank
When your system produces more than your home needs, the surplus is recorded on the received channel and goes into your net meter bank as a credit.
Draw from the bank on low-sun months
In months when you use more than you produce, credits in your bank offset the energy portion of your bill before you're charged for grid power.
Understand the rate structure
United Power's residential rates include fixed and demand-based components that solar production doesn't offset. We'll walk you through how your specific rate interacts with solar before you sign anything.
Good to know
- United Power has been evolving its rate design in recent years; we check the current rate and net metering terms for every project before quoting savings.
- Batteries can reduce demand-based charges by shaving peaks — often a strong pairing on United Power's rates.
- Connection requirements and the net metering application are handled by Seed Solar as part of your install.
