Net metering with Longmont Power & Communications

Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) is Longmont's city-owned electric utility. As a municipal utility outside the Colorado PUC's rate jurisdiction, LPC sets its own net metering and interconnection rules through city rate cases. LPC has offered net metering to residential solar customers and is generally supportive of rooftop solar in Longmont.

Interconnection

Seed Solar handles all paperwork with LPC

How it works, step by step

1

Interconnection through LPC

Seed Solar submits your interconnection application directly to Longmont Power & Communications. LPC's engineering staff reviews the application to confirm your system meets their technical requirements before approving your install.

2

Bi-directional metering tracks both flows

LPC installs a net meter that measures energy delivered to your home and energy exported to the grid separately. Power consumed in your home as it's generated doesn't flow through the meter at all.

3

Net credits applied to your bill

At the end of each billing period, LPC nets your exported energy against what you consumed from the grid. A surplus results in a credit that applies to your future bills.

4

Municipal tariffs can evolve

Longmont Power's rate structure and net metering terms are set by City Council through utility rate cases. We confirm the exact crediting terms in force at the time your system is designed and connected.

Good to know

  • LPC is a municipal utility not regulated by the Colorado PUC; its solar policies are set locally and are subject to change with rate cases.
  • Longmont has historically been an efficient-energy-friendly city and has offered local rebate programs alongside its net metering program — we check current availability for every project.
  • System size is typically limited to your annual load — LPC interconnection guidelines set the cap.
