Net metering with Holy Cross Energy

Holy Cross Energy is a member-owned cooperative serving the Vail and Roaring Fork valleys, and one of Colorado's most renewables-forward utilities — on track for 100% clean energy by 2030. Solar connects under HCE's Renewable Energy Net Metering Service tariff, and HCE has offered per-kW incentives for new net metered systems.

How it works, step by step

1

A net meter tracks power both ways

HCE's net meter measures energy delivered from the grid and excess solar returned to it. Power your panels supply directly to your home reduces your purchases without ever crossing the meter.

2

Credits under the net metering tariff

Energy you send back is credited according to HCE's Renewable Energy Net Metering Service tariff, offsetting energy charges in months when you use more than you produce.

3

A per-kW incentive for new systems

HCE has offered upfront incentives for new net metered solar — as of April 2026, a flat $100 per kW for new interconnection applications, up to 25 kW. Incentive levels are set by HCE and change over time, so we confirm the current offer when we quote your project.

4

Interconnection approval before you build

Your interconnection application must be approved before installation, and some local feeders have capacity constraints that HCE reviews case by case. Seed Solar handles the application and works with HCE's renewables team on your behalf.

Good to know

  • HCE encourages pairing solar with battery storage and maintains rate structures that can reward it — batteries also keep your lights on during outages, which solar alone can't do.
  • HCE's board sets rates and rate structure, and both are adjusted over time (including an April 2026 rate change) — payback estimates should be built on current rates, which we verify for your address.
  • Some feeders have interconnection capacity limits that open and close as HCE upgrades its system; we check the status for your location early so there are no surprises.
